FAQ
WHAT IS YOUR BREEDING PHILOSOPHY?
Martyrsford Angoras has always tried to avoid extremes when it comes to breeding.

We believe that a middle of the road approach allows us to channel our genetics into an animal that has appeal to a wide spectrum of the angora industry.
We breed well balanced rams with a good constitution, strong head and horns, free of colour and well formed hocks.
Our fleeces have good length, yolk and solidity with a general micron range between 32 - 38 micron.
Our ewes are well grown out, veld adapted animals with specific focus given to uniformity and fertility within our stud.
WHAT IS MOHAIR?
Mohair is the natural fibre produced by angora goats.
Mohair is one of the world’s most valuable natural fibres and is often referred to as the ‘diamond fibre’, partly for it’s high economic value but also for it’s lustre and ability to shine, unlike any other natural fibre.
WHY BUY MOHAIR?
•Natural fibre

•100 % bio-gradable

•Timeless
• ‘Sustainable Fashion’ = Sustainably farmed & sourced
•Support local communities
WHY ARE GOATS SHORN?
For their well-being, angora goats need to be shorn every six months.
Not doing so, exposes the animal to the fatal risks of getting stuck in vegetation, not being able to see predators and the young kids, not being able to suckle on their mothers.
Shearing of angora goats is a good and healthy management practice that all mohair farmers have to adhere to.
The mohair is then processed into beautiful luxury fashion items.
WHAT IS THE RESPONSIBLE MOHAIR STANDARD?
The Responsible Mohair Standard is a set of industry standards that each mohair farmer has to adhere to.
If they want to sell their mohair in South Africa and internationally, they have to be RMS certified.
This standard aims to put the buyer’s mind at ease, that all mohair bought is sustainably and ethically farmed and sourced.
South Africa has once again set the bar with regard to these industry standards.
